TracRac Installation

TracRac provides detailed instructions with all their products.

Mounting the Base Rails

Trucks with Stake Pockets

Trucks without Stake Pockets

Trucks with Stake Pockets  For trucks with stake pockets, the TracRac rack system is easily installed without damage. This includes domestic full size trucks, the Ford Ranger, and later Mazda pickups. Simply attach the stake pocket block (and plastic shim if necessary) and lower them into the stake pockets and tighten.

Tips and Notes:

The plastic shim may be needed for the base rails to lay flat.

For trucks with flat sides, a piece of rubber tape can be used instead of the plastic shim.

To protect your truck's finish, you may want to use a compliant tape or strip next to the paint.

It is very important that the rails are parallel.

The rails are drilled for use on several different trucks, the instructions include a template so it is easy to find the correct holes.

Trucks with Stake Pockets and a Bedliner  For trucks with stake pockets and an "over the rail" bedliner the TracRac system still installs easily without damage, but a few extra steps are required. The bedliner will need holes over the stake pockets for the stake pocket block screw to pass through, and the bedliner will need to be raised to install the stake pocket blocks on the underneath.

Tips and Notes:

The plastic shim may be needed for the base rails to lay flat.

You can cut square holes in the bedliner to clear the stake pocket blocks. This simplifies installation, but requires modification of the bedliner.

Trucks without Stake Pockets  For trucks without stake pockets installing the TracRac system requires drilling holes. The base rails are then bolted down using rectangular rubber shims and brass pocket nuts.

Tips and Notes:

The drilled holes must be very carefully located

Mounting the Overhead Racks

Overhead racks and Crossbars Overview
Overhead rack assembly diagram.

Tips and Notes:

As with the base rails, the most important thing is making sure things are lined up.

Follow the sequence of steps carefully for best results.

Mark, measure and don't force things.

When assembled properly, the overhead racks can be slid from one side. It is best to pull from the center if possible, but properly assembled racks slide easily.

Mounting Crossbars to Overhead racks

Tips and Notes:

Tighten the uprights to the base track.

The corner brace needs the plastic washers pictured.

Make sure everything is lined up and centered before tightening down.

Follow the sequence in the TracRac instructions.

If you will be adding a cantilever cab extension accessory, it will save time to read the cantilever install instructions before assembling the overhead racks.

Mounting Crossbars to Overhead racks

Tips and Notes:

The crossbar has a right side down. Make sure the indented side is down. The indentation engages the saddle plate and the corner brace.

Correct Overhead rack mounting:
Line up diagram.

The overhead racks should slide easily. Get everything lined up and centered, so that when things are bolted down the upright meets the baserail like the top picture.

Incorrect Overhead rack mounting:

If the racks don't slide easily then they probably fit like the bottom picture.
