Car Roof Rack Cross-bar Round Up

Welcome to the roof rack cross-bar round up. We rounded up all the different crossbars for some group photos. Here are some of the pictures. Some are with their caps on and some are with their caps off. We thought seeing them altogether might help someone decide which rack to buy or figure out which rack they have. We took measurements too.

Here they all are with their name tags on. We're not quite sure why the Yakima bar didn't show up, maybe next time. Also, the Thule Aeroblade doesn't have its top rubber rub strip in, but it comes with one. With the exception of the Highland Universal all of the end caps are really nice. The Inno end cap is soft rubber, the TracRac G2's end cap is metal and all the others are hard plastic. The TracRac cross-bars aren't really for cars, but they showed up so we let them in the round up.

10 different rack crossbars laid out, from a low more parallel angle.

Here is a more oblique view of the group. The Inno end cap is longer than the rest.

The square bars all have a thick plastic coating (sleeve) with ridges, the SportRack ridges don't show but they are there, or maybe we had the bar upside down. The Thule and SportRack ridges are raised, while Inno has grooves. The Thule and Inno plastic sleeves are very tight, the SportRack is a little loose, it is possible to slide the steel bar inside the sleeve, but not loose enough that it would be a problem.

The Rhino-Rack black bar is anodized black, the Thule and Rhino Rack silver bars are a matte raw aluminum finish.

The TracRac bars have a very tough metallic powder coat finish, it is the same finish that is used on high end alloy wheels.

The Highland Universal has a "unique" hammered metal finish, it is actually pretty durable for a cheap rack.

The crossbars laid out with a tape measure. Taken from above.

We measured the roof rack cross-bars in our group with a digital caliper that was set to inches. We measured the width (W) and height (H) of the bar, the measurements are above. The measurements did not include end caps or rubber rub strips, they are of just the bar itself. For the square bars the measurements did of course include the plastic sleeve, since they are really a part of the rack cross-bar. We measured the sleeves too.

Here are some more details. The caliper was still set in inches for these measurements. On the square bars we measured the thickness of the plastic sleeve. The sleeves are tough, but they yield easily to a razor knife, so we cut about an inch off each bar and measured the thickness. We measured where there were ridges, labeled as top above, and where there were not ridges, labeled as side above.

The aluminum rack cross-bars all have a T-slots along the top of the cross-bars so we measured the width (W) of the slot, the height (H) of the slot and the width of the opening (O).

We were kind of at a loss on the round bar so we measured the diameters of the holes that the rack foot installs to.
